How To Get Started Doing What You Love…Knowing Your Why

Posted on: December 19th, 2011 by Beth Heilman

Today's post is the next in the continuing saga of "As The Business Turns" or more aptly named "As The Mind Changes" (read the previous post if you haven't got a clue what I'm talking about)

On our last episode we talked some about the frustrations we encounter on this entrepreneurial journey doing what we love when we pretty much love to do everything…and we make ourselves crazy trying to decide what the heck to do.

Here's something that's helped me narrow down the field of business possibilities and keep from banging my head against the wall (too much 🙂 )

First, before you try and figure out the "what" (or what's) of the thing you're going to be earning a living at, it's important to know your why.

Along with your why is the question, what do you want your life to look like?

What I mean by that is it will do you absolutely no good to choose a business running a used book store because you love old, rare books if you're a free spirit and want to be able to pick up on a whim and fly off to Tibet. There's not much whimming allowed when you have a brick-and-mortar store to open up everyday. The freedom to travel you long for will be sacrificed for the day-to-day routine of running a store.

Can you see yourself feeling stiffled? Maybe even resenting the business after a while because you feel tied down? Best to figure that out at this stage…BEFORE you order the bookshelves, agreed? Thought so…let's keep going.

Figure out your "why" and write it down.

Next, take out a blank sheet of paper and start listing out all the things you love to do. Really let your creativity flow. Nothing is too
silly or insignificant at this point. Pen ready? Ok…let 'er rip!

(Clock ticking…Jeopardy music playing in the background) Ding!

Ok. Did you come up with a good sized list of things? It doesn't matter if they all relate or are polar opposites of each other. Just get 'em on paper.

If you're like me, some will relate and some just make me wanna go, "huh?" Doesn't matter. What you love to do and the ability to make a living doing it is part of your DNA. It's time to start tapping into it.

Now, a little caveat here. There ARE those things that should be done just for the sheer love of doing them because quite frankly, there just ain't a market for it. Here's an example (and I'm making this up); say you love collecting chicken feathers.

You have the most extensive collection of domestic chicken feathers in the northern hemisphere. You're an extremely proud chicken feather collector and would love to open up a chicken feather museum. Do you see where I'm going here? Thank you.:-)

Not much call for a chicken feather collection unless you're a balding chicken. That, my friend is better kept as a hobby. Hobbies are a happy thing, too.

Back to our regularly scheduled program…

What I want you to think about now, and until the next post, is possible different "profit centers" using the items on your list.

Are there ways you could turn you passions into an information product like an ebook, book or mp3 that people would pay for? Could you do a how-to workshop in your town?

How about making an actual physical product that you could sell and distribute is a local shop or maybe put on ebay. There's a zillion ways to market and distribute both physical and digital products.

What I want to do here today is open up your imagination and let you know that you really can have the life of your dreams doing what you love. Just apply that creativity of yours and watch what happens.

That's enough brainstorming for now. Keep going over your list and next time we'll talk about how you can do what you love even if you're still working a regular J-O-B (for now 😉 ) Leave a comment below and let me know how your list is going. I'd love to hear all about it. Until next time…

Being About Your Business: Are You Looking For Advice Or Approval?

Posted on: July 11th, 2011 by Beth Heilman

Are You Looking For Advice or Approval?

So many times when we’re stuck in the middle of making a decision, or moving forward in our businesses,
we go to our friends and family for advice.

What do they think?

Are You Looking For Business Advice...Or Approval?

Looking For Biz Advice...Or Approval?

If they were in our shoes, what would they do?

We think we’re being prudent in asking for advice, but are we really?

So many times we tell ourselves we’re asking for advice when we’re really wanting approval.

There is a difference.

Advice is information you seek out about something you’re considering doing from someone who’s done it before you.
They literally have a mental library of past experience, successes and failures, to pull from.

Most times when we go to our friends and family for advice it’s for something they have little or no experience in
(and secretly we know that).

Deep down we either want them to make us feel all warm and fuzzy about the plans we’re making. We want their approval.

The flip side of that is when we ask those closest to us what they think of our plans and they shoot more holes in them
than a slice of swiss cheese, we abandon our plans.

We’ve now justified in our own heads all the reasons why this new thing won’t work.
We abandon our plans because of the opinions of folks who can’t even remember the last time they tried something new.

And we choose to stay small.

How sad.

The moral of the story? Only seek advice, real advice from those who have been where you want to go.
Then…and here’s the most important part…DO IT!

Advice or approval…success or mediocrity? The choice is up to you.

Laid-off, Downsized and Unemployed-Reinventing Yourself in Today’s Crazy Economy

Posted on: November 8th, 2010 by Beth Heilman

Time To Reinvent YourselfThese days you can’t turn on the news, open a newspaper or surf the internet without getting bombarded with headlines warning of impending doom for the economy. Now, don’t get me wrong, as a country we’re in a mess financially. Just the housing crisis alone is enough to make you want to stay in bed and pull the covers over your head. Unfortunately, that won’t keep the power on or a roof over your head.

If you’re fortunate enough to still be gainfully employed, count your blessings. For those of you (and I’m talking about myself here, too) that have been on the other side of the bosses desk when those dreaded words came..”Your position is being eliminated”, there is life after a J-O-B.

Let me tell you briefly what happened to me. I was in the real estate industry for nearly 17 years as a New Home Sales Agent. Worked for a builder, had great insurance, paid my dues by studying the industry and working my way up through the ranks. It was pretty darned comfortable. Life was good during the boom a few years ago. We had people waiting on lists to get houses. Talk about having a captive audience.

Then as things started to cool off and all the crazy loans started to go bad, those of us on the front lines could see what was coming. Unfortunately some of the major mortgage companies and builders were too busy counting their profits to notice and refused to scale back. The result is what you see on the news today, foreclosures, businesses closing and a lot of hard-working people out of work. I was one of those people.

What’s a person to do when the rug gets pulled out from under you in this goofy economy? There’s several things actually, but short of doing anything illegal or immoral(I’m smiling as I write that), take a good hard look at your strengths, talents and passions and reinvent yourself.

What do I mean by that? You know you have things you’re good at and enjoy doing that would translate very well into another line of work, possibly even your own business. The only limits are your imagination. And these days, the internet makes it possible to reach people you never would have met otherwise. It’s a home based business persons dream come true.

Here are just a few ideas:

Are you good at administrative and organizational stuff? How about being a Virtual Assistant? A V.A. is someone who works from home, but who sets appointments, sends emails, and does all the tasks of an assistant who works in an office, but you do it from home (and save on gas and dry cleaning bills)

Are you an animal person? How about making a video (or writing an e-book) on how to train that stubborn puppy dog? THen, make it available online.

A coffee or tea lover? How about producing a video on making the perfect cup of tea and then include it with every purchase from the wonderful tea company you represent? All that can be done online.

Into Health and Nutrition? Start a blog on all the tips and tricks you’ve learned over the years. There are some wonderful network marketing companies in the Health and Nutrition field you could represent. Find a product you can really be passionate about. You can help folks stay healthy and build your own business in what’s projected to be a $1 trillion industry.

Those are just a fraction of what can be done. Let your mind wander. Allow yourself to dream and before you know it, your perfect opportunity will present itself. You’ve heard the saying that when life gives you lemons, make lemonade? Your lemonade will be when you realize that the one security you have in these crazy times is you. There’s an unlimited number of possibilities available to you when you do a little soul-searching and start to think “outside the box”. Forgive the cliche, but it’s true.

Don’t let Wall Street, the evening news or your old boss have control over you or your finances anymore. That lay-off may have been a blessing in disguise when you use it as an opportunity to find your passion, live your dreams and earn a living that you never thought possible. Then, unless you want to, you’ll never have to work a J-O-B again.

Have you or anyone you know had the proverbial job rug pulled out from under them? Leave a comment and let me know how you’re doing and what you’ve done to overcome “pink slip shock”.
