Your Business: It Doesn’t Matter How Small You Start…Just START

Posted on: September 5th, 2011 by Beth Heilman

Lots of times when those entrepreneurial feelings start. We're not quite sure what to do about it.

You know you want to have a business of your own, but there's SO much to do…and there's SO many things you think you have to get in place first.

What about a website? I have to have a website…and business cards.

Must design the perfect business card and Oh, I'll need a logo because the experts say I must "brand" myself.

To all this I say…STOP!!

You're gonna make yourself nuts and you haven't even sold the first thing yet.

Here's what you really need to get started in business…Ready?

The basic ingredients to a successful business consist of these things:

A need in the market that needs filled or a problem that needs solved People that have those needs or problems (and can pay for the solutions)

You…and your ability to be the go-to person for taking care of those needs and problems.

Your mouth (or someone elses mouth) to get the word out about you and what you do.

Too simple?

Why make it more complicated?

Everyday on the internet you'll find the latest guru-du-jour who'll tell you that their system or training is the answer to building the business of your dreams, and they may be right…partly.

But, if you get all caught up in the getting-ready-to-get-ready syndrome ; buying every tool and training and waiting until everything's perfect

to launch your business, you're doomed before you even start.

And you'll go broke in the process.

It's not about the "stuff", folks.

It's about the people you serve and the product or service you provide to them.

Start small. Talk to five people today about what you do. Heck…just talk to one if that's all you can do, but do it.

Once you start it just gets easier and easier. And if you mess up, so what?

You just figured out how NOT to do something. Congratulations!! You just had a learning experience.

Your marching orders for today…decide what needs to be done in your business today and…DO IT!!

If you're feeling stuck and need some advice or want to share a celebration of how you "just did it", leave a comment below for some
help or a happy dance. Talk with you soon.

To Your Success,
Sonrisas (smiles),

Beth

When All Else Fails…Keep the Faith

Posted on: August 31st, 2011 by Beth Heilman

We've all had "those" days.

An unexpected bill and more month left than money, someone cut you off in traffic, a bad report from the doctor or an argument with someone you love…

Maybe you've had it all happen at once. I know I have.

For those times you feel like screaming "ENOUGH already!!"…

For those times where all you want to do is go back to bed, turn off the lights and hide from the world, there is one word that will get you through it all…FAITH.

I'm not talking the airy, fairy kind of faith where "everything is great and wonderful" even if your house happens to be burning down around you.

All the positive affirmations in the world aren't going to keep the flames at bay.

The Faith I'm talking about is the deep rooted, absolute knowing that no

matter how bad things may look right now, It WILL be alright.

That kind of Faith is a gift from God and it's yours for the taking. All you have to do is accept it and use it.

If you know any of my story, you know that I've faced some pretty big odds (fibromyalgia, a major job lay-off and bankruptcy to name just a few) and came through with my Faith intact.

There are those of you out there that have come through way worse than me and are such a beautiful example of what having Faith can do. You've had cancer and beat it like my sister, you've lost a job, lost your home, lost a loved one and came through it all even stronger than before. That's Faith in action, my friend and I applaud you for it.

How do you muster up that kind of Faith?

You ask for it. Rather, you ask God to show it to you because truly, it's already in you.

It may be small and it may seem hidden because of some setbacks and disappointments you've had, but it's there. You just have to call it to come forward.

I am a self-acknowledged "Faith Junkie" It's my remedy of choice when my world seems like it's ready to implode.

One of the biggest compliments my man, a self-proclaimed "realist" ever paid me (besides my butt looked really good in my black jeans 🙂 ) was when I was really struggling with a tough situation, but told him I knew it would all work out. He looked me right in the eyes and said "you really have faith, don't you?" "Yes…I do", I told him. He paused for a minute, smiled and said "that's good. Keep it up". I did…and still do.

Don't know how to operate any other way.

And yes, that situation did work out. Because I took the action that needed taken and had the Faith that it would work.

Sometimes we're afraid to "let go and let God" because we've been "let down" so many times in the past. I understand that.

You can't change the past, but you can impact your future by learning from what has been. Those are your life lessons (even though sometimes we wish we could've dropped that class a little earlier).

Where ever you are in your life right now, no matter what you're facing; when you have the Faith you'll make it, you will. Sometimes the results won't be what you expected. Who knows?…Maybe they'll be better!

Keep the Faith, my friends…and MAKE it a wonderful day.

As always, please leave a comment and let me know how you're doing and a time when calling on your Faith has helped you.

The Way To Overcome Resistance Is With Action

Posted on: August 30th, 2011 by Beth Heilman

Ever get something in your head that you just KNEW you were supposed to do?

It could be losing weight…or moving to a new location…or starting a new business (one of my personal favorites 🙂 )

The excitement builds, all the pieces are in place. You may even have your friends and family on board ready to cheer you on in this next exciting step in your life and all of a sudden…WHAM!!

You stop dead in your tracks. Suddenly all the motivation is gone. Even doing the laundry and cleaning the cat box sound like more fun than following through on your new plan.

It's the killer of dreams and the squasher of all things even remotely looking like personal growth or forward movement in your life.

The one sure-fire way to tell if the thing you're wanting to do is really what you're supposed to be doing is when Resistance starts
rearing it's ugly head.

How do you overcome Resistance? Take ACTION.

Do what it is you need to be doing whether you feel like it or not. And whether you're scared to or not. This exposes Resistance for what it really is.

You see, Resistance likes the status quo. It wants you to stay safe and small. The moment you make a decision and start moving forward in your life, good ol' resistance will start following you like a shadow.

You'll procrastinate, you'll rationalize. In it's strongest form, you may even get depressed or sick.

There's a fantastic book called "The War of Art" by Steven Pressfield that goes into wonderful detail how resistance in all it's forms, shows up and tries to keep you stuck. I highly recommend it to anyone who knows they've been called to greater things, but just can't seem to "get it in gear".

It doesn't matter a step you take, but do something that will move you closer to where you want to be…whatever that is for you. Take action today.

If you're feeling stuck right now, but know in your heart of hearts you've been called to do bigger things and play a bigger game, I
encourage you to get "The War of Art".

It will be a game changer for you…it was for me.

Remember one thing about taking action when you're feeling resistance.

It's kind of like turning the light on in a dark room. The room seems spooky and unfamiliar until you flip the switch then…POOF!

Now you can step into that room because you can see. No more fumbling around (procrastinating and avoiding) because you know what's in front of you and what to walk around.

Action is your light switch…flip it today.

Leave a comment below and let me know how YOU overcome resistance. Love to hear from you 🙂

No Matter How Things May Look…There Is Always A Way

Posted on: August 18th, 2011 by Beth Heilman

I've collected Tiggers for years. You know who I'm talking about, don't you? That adorable orange and black-striped, child-like sidekick of the timeless character, Winnie The Pooh.

Over the last couple decades I've been given stuffed Tiggers, Tigger coffee mugs, Tigger shirts, Tigger PJ's, Tigger Christmas ornaments…You name it, I've got the Tigger for it.

Why Tigger? Because he's the eternal optomist. No matter what's going on around him, no matter what others are saying, no matter whether it's a "blustery day" or some other such negative happenstance, Tigger believes things will always just fine. Tiggers Bounce Back… 🙂

Are you a Tigger…or are you (oh, bother) an Eeyore?

It's so easy to get sucked in to all the negativity from the news, from friends and from family. Some people only feel normal when they're miserable. There are people who are perfectly content to stay where they are in life and there are people who, no matter what crisis or setback happens to them, they bounce back. They're Tiggers

TIggers believe there's always a way. Each one of us, everyday has a choice to either react to the doom and gloom "out there" or respond by rising above it and decide to succeed in spite of it.

I'll ask you again…are you a Tigger or an Eeyore? I'm hoping you'll join me and my Tiggers. We bounce back 🙂

Being About Your Business: Are You Looking For Advice Or Approval?

Posted on: July 11th, 2011 by Beth Heilman

Are You Looking For Advice or Approval?

So many times when we’re stuck in the middle of making a decision, or moving forward in our businesses,
we go to our friends and family for advice.

What do they think?

Are You Looking For Business Advice...Or Approval?

Looking For Biz Advice...Or Approval?

If they were in our shoes, what would they do?

We think we’re being prudent in asking for advice, but are we really?

So many times we tell ourselves we’re asking for advice when we’re really wanting approval.

There is a difference.

Advice is information you seek out about something you’re considering doing from someone who’s done it before you.
They literally have a mental library of past experience, successes and failures, to pull from.

Most times when we go to our friends and family for advice it’s for something they have little or no experience in
(and secretly we know that).

Deep down we either want them to make us feel all warm and fuzzy about the plans we’re making. We want their approval.

The flip side of that is when we ask those closest to us what they think of our plans and they shoot more holes in them
than a slice of swiss cheese, we abandon our plans.

We’ve now justified in our own heads all the reasons why this new thing won’t work.
We abandon our plans because of the opinions of folks who can’t even remember the last time they tried something new.

And we choose to stay small.

How sad.

The moral of the story? Only seek advice, real advice from those who have been where you want to go.
Then…and here’s the most important part…DO IT!

Advice or approval…success or mediocrity? The choice is up to you.
