How To Make Rose Water At Home: It’s Easy-Here’s How

Want to know how to make rose water? It's really a very simple process. Rose water has been made since Islamic Medievel times. It comes from the distilling of the fresh petals of garden roses and it's really very easy to do.

Rose water is used in a variety of ways. It is most commonly used for it's astringent and antiseptic properties. People have used rose water for healing of dry, damaged skin for centuries.

Skin care companies today use it frequently in toners made for dry skin because it's light, soothing and will leave your skin feeling soft and silky.

Rose water is also a delicious ingredient that's used in a lot of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Indian dessert dishes. In Malaysia and Singapore, rose water is mixed with milk, sugar and pink food coloring to make a drink called bandung.

A word of caution here though if you're the do-it-yourself type. Make sure that if you do learn how to make rose water at home and try it on your own, use roses that are free from any pesticides. (or bugs, we all need a little protein, but not that way)

What you'll need:

  • Enamel pot with a dome lid
  • Brick (maybe a fireplace brick?)
  • Heat resistant glass or stainless steel bowl (quart size)
  • 2-3 quarts fresh rose petals (no stems or leaves)
  • Water
  • Ice (cubed or crushed)

Place the brick in the bottom of the enamel pot on stove. Place bowl on the brick. Add the fresh rose petals to the pot around the base of the bowl and brick, then add enough water to cover the roses. The water should be about brick level.

Bring water to a rolling boil then turn down to a simmer. Invert the lid (dome side down) on the pot and put ice in the lid. Now you have the makings of a still. Get it, dis-still- ation. The steam rising from the roses and water below will reach the inverted dome lid (with the ice in it), condense and drip into the bowl below.

Collect the water at about 20 minute intervals and put it into a sterilized jar. It should make about 1/2 to one quart of the most wonderfully fragrant rose water. Store in the refrigerator.

See how easy learning how to make rose water is. Your dry skin will love you for it. And now, you can enjoy the velvety smooth feel it can give your skin anytime you want.
